VilaMoura

The old course

Is the second oldest in Algarve and the oldest of Vilamoura courses that form part of a luxury resort close to endless beaches. Frank Pennink (designer) wanted to create a course in Algarve that would resemble those beautiful, challenging British courses. With great success he achieved it

Opened in 1969, the fairways of the course run through surrounding pine trees and laid out in an interesting way to take advantage of the natural contours. This is a very attractive course with a great variety of holes.

The Par 3 holes are all different and visually very beautiful, representing the toughest challenge on the course. They require careful selection of irons and near-perfect ball control. Over the rest of the course, trees play a decisive role, lining the doglegs and punishing any careless strokes. The greens are small, especially on the shorter holes, where there is simply no margin for error.

A unique feature of this course is the fact that Par is 73, despite the fact that among its last nine holes there are no less than four with a Par 5.
It was selected for the Portuguese Open in 1979, in which Bran Barnes was victor.

Laguna

is the most recent of the Vilamoura courses. Opened in 1990 and designed by Joseph Lee, the course makes full use of the wet, marshy level ground near the sea.

The layout is very different from the other Vilamoura courses. Here the golfer can drive off with more confidence, because of the greater width of the fairways. Level terrain and few trees present no difficulties, where you might get into trouble is the many water hazards with strategically placed bunkers in open terrain.
this course it visually intimidating, but because it is not very long, the golfer may complete it without great difficulty. The result is that the satisfaction of the golfer, after finishing his holes, is even greater.

Pinhal

originally designed by Frank Pennink, was partly redesigned in 1985 by Robert Trent Jones, who introduced new challenges into the course.

redesigning the course has brought in a great variety of holes mixing together two completely different architectural concepts: British and American. As a result, the golfer is confronted by very different kinds of play.

Built in the middle of a beautiful pine wood, with panoramic views over the sea, The outward nine holes wander through the holiday villas that line the fairways. one of the main characteristics of this course is the small size of its greens, requiring great precision from the golfer in terms of approach shots. Well positioned bunkers thru out the course make it enjoyable for the player, testing their choice of clubs and their accuracy.
In 1988 this course hosted the Portuguese Ladies' Open, part of the women's professional European circuit. Peggy Conley, an American, was the winner.

Vila Sol

is a picture postcard of Portuguese golf . Situated between Vilamoura and Quinta do Lago, at the heart of one of the Algarve's most developed resort areas. Though opened only in July 1991 the course already shows a considerable degree of maturity as a result of its excellent upkeep.

This course, winding through an immense pine wood, in which fig trees, oaks and almond trees arealso present, is the work of the famous architect Donald Steel. It is a typical inland golf course of the British school, posing a test of the golfer's strategic skills. Its narrow fairways demand accurate driving. The player also has to face several obstacles during the game - lakes and bunkers - as well as fast grass on the greens. The first four holes are known has the toughest of the course so a low overall score is important for an early success

hosting the Portuguese Open in 1992 and 1993 -was vila sol most challenging test when the invigilators were Europe's top professionals. These golf stars heaped praise upon the excellent playing conditions and the quality of its greens, which they considered as good as the best in Europe. No doubt earning this course high marks

Millennium

Hawtree & Sons were contracted to plan this modification and design work which has culminated in the creation of the new, exciting 18-hole Millennium Golf Course. Refurbishment to the existing nine holes commenced in May 1999 and included the complete rebuilding of the tees, greens and the old nine holes, several new design features were incorporated with a view to simplifying the strategy of the course and in order to make it more golfer-friendly. This applies especially to holes 8 and 9, the only ones on this loop with water hazards. Also, many of the bunkers have been re-shaped and the smaller greens expanded.

This renovated North course has been joined together with the new 9-hole loop to offer a layout of different character, style and playing quality to the remaining Laguna Course. The two nines of the Millennium Course complement each other handsomely and have strong traits of Martin Hawtree's traditional architectural style.

The terrain is partially open; similar to that of the original 27 holes, whereas the remainder meanders through attractive pine trees so the fairways tend to be narrow, placing a premium on accurate play.

Victoria

is the most recent course to be opened to the public in the Algarve. Laid out on virtually flat terrain covering close to 90 hectares, it includes a series of constructed mounds specially landscaped to emulate the outline of inland hills on the horizon. The series of beautiful lakes and waterfalls also helps to provide an attractive background whilst playing the course.

This is at present the longest 18 holes golf course in Portugal and promises to be a notable course in Europe. Each hole has a minimum of five tees from which to play thus making the course suitable for golfers of all handicap levels. Before playing, it could be advisable to take advantage of the immense putting green of around 2,500 m2 to "feel the green" in that very important end game.
